Financial assistance for kinship caregivers and their families.

Call 1-800-535-1218 for free help and support.

Opening your home to a child can bring more love and meaning into your life. But it may mean you have less money to go around. Kinship caregivers who need financial assistance can apply for a variety of support programs in Michigan.

Where can I find financial support for my kinship family?

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has many financial resources available to help families in need. Eligibility for most programs is based on income level.

MI Bridges – Most MDHHS financial assistance programs are available through the MI Bridges website. Once you create an account, you can apply for these state programs:

  • Child Only Grant – This grant is available for children being raised by a relative who is not a biological parent. Eligibility is based on the child’s income and assets, not the caregiver’s. To apply, go to the MI Bridges website and click on the “Cash Assistance” button. When you apply, be sure to note that you are a Relative Caregiver applying on behalf of the child in your care.
  • Cash Assistance – Temporary cash assistance is available for eligible pregnant women, low-income individuals with children, and individuals who are disabled or who care for a disabled individual. Eligibility is based on your assets, income, and residency. Go to MI Bridges to apply; visit the MDHHS website to get more details.
  • Food Assistance – You may qualify for temporary food assistance; eligibility is based on the financial situation and residency of all household members. If you qualify, you’ll be given a Bridge Card to purchase certain food items. Go to MI Bridges to apply; visit the MDHHS website to get more details.

If you are a kinship caregiver who is providing Relative Foster Care through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, you are eligible for funding. More information can be found on the child welfare page.

How can I find free help for tax preparation?

Free assistance with tax preparation is available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, for people who make roughly $54,000 or less. At hundreds of VITA sites across Michigan, you can have your state, federal, and city income taxes prepared and filed by a highly trained, IRS-certified volunteer preparer for free.
